FORT MYERS, FL – Coroy Dontavia Flournoy, 40, of Fort Myers, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The bust, a product of a coordinated effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, adds another name to the growing list of repeat offenders caught breaking federal gun laws. Flournoy now faces a potential 15-year stretch in federal prison.
The ATF, along with the Cape Coral Police Department, FBI, and Florida Department of Law Enforcement, descended on a Fort Myers residence February 21, 2023, acting on an active warrant for Flournoy’s arrest. It wasn’t the warrant itself that landed him in deeper trouble, but what officers found during the search: a loaded Glock handgun stashed under the mattress of a bed. The weapon was accompanied by multiple magazines and “several dozen” rounds of ammunition, according to court documents.
Flournoy’s prior criminal history immediately flagged the discovery as a serious violation. As a multi-time convicted felon, he is legally prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms or ammunition. Forensic analysis by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed the Glock belonged to Flournoy, sealing his fate.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Simon Eth is prosecuting the case, framing it as part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” initiative. This program, launched in 2021, aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement. The official line is about “fostering trust” and “community-based organizations,” but the reality is boots on the ground and hard time for those who break the law.
While the feds tout PSN as a comprehensive strategy, the case boils down to a simple truth: a felon had a loaded gun. This isn’t about complex conspiracies, it’s about taking firearms out of the hands of those who have already demonstrated a disregard for the law. The sentencing date for Flournoy has not yet been set, but with a maximum penalty of 15 years, the judge has significant discretion in deciding his future.
The Tampa Field Division of the ATF spearheaded the investigation. This case serves as a stark reminder that federal agents are actively monitoring and pursuing individuals who illegally possess firearms, even in seemingly quiet corners of Florida. For Flournoy, that hidden Glock has likely cost him a significant portion of his life.
