Isaiah Markeis Sims, a 23-year-old convicted felon from Pensacola, Florida, was busted with a loaded Glock handgun after a traffic stop turned into a foot chase in August 2025. Sims was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over by law enforcement, who caught a whiff of marijuana and asked everyone to step out. That’s when Sims made a run for it, but didn’t get far before being caught and found with the gun. The reason for the traffic stop and subsequent chase was not immediately clear, but it’s evident that Sims had something to hide.
The case against Sims was built by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who worked together to investigate and prosecute the crime. Assistant United States Attorney Jessica S. Etherton handled the prosecution, which resulted in Sims pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Sims’ sentence is a significant one: 27 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence is part of the Department of Justice’s Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing crime and keeping communities safe. U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin praised the work of law enforcement and his office, saying they are committed to backing up their partners and keeping the streets safe from dangerous criminals.
The outcome of this case serves as a reminder that law enforcement is actively working to reduce crime and keep communities safe. Sims’ conviction and sentence demonstrate the seriousness with which the justice system takes illegal firearms possession, particularly by convicted felons.
