A loaded handgun was discovered on convicted felon Ernest Lee Thomas II during a traffic stop in Pensacola, Florida, May 31, 2025. Thomas, 35, was behind the wheel when Escambia County deputies pulled him over. A search of the vehicle yielded a .45-caliber Taurus handgun with a round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine.
Thomas claimed ownership of the firearm, which sparked a federal investigation. Court documents revealed he’d previously been convicted of distribution of cocaine and possession of stolen firearms in the Northern District of Florida.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher C. Patterson secured Thomas’s 37-month prison sentence. This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative targeting violent crime.
Thomas’s fate is a direct result of law enforcement’s diligence and the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s commitment to keeping the community safe. The operation aims to eliminate cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and other perpetrators of violent crime.
