Wichita Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Gun Crime

A Wichita man was sentenced to five years in federal prison for a firearms violation, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom announced Monday.

José Armando De Luna, 35, Wichita, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of firearms after a felony conviction. In his plea, he admitted that on Sept. 6, 2013, when he was arrested in Wichita, he possessed 20 firearms including shotguns, rifles and handguns. At the time, he was prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms because of a prior felony conviction.

According to court documents, the investigation began in September 2013 when the Wichita Police arranged to buy methamphetamine from De Luna at his residence in the 700 block of South Terrace. Police seized firearms belonging to him when they served search warrants at that residence and a residence in the 1800 block of South Green Acres.

Grissom commended the Wichita Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger for their work on the case.

De Luna’s sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Monti Belot. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Wichita Police.

Grissom said the case shows the importance of holding individuals accountable for violating federal firearms laws. ‘The public should be assured that we will continue to prosecute those who break these laws and put public safety at risk,’ he said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Metzger prosecuted the case. It was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Wichita Police. U.S. District Judge Monti Belot presided over the case.
