CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In a chilling verdict, Edward Lopez Jr., 29, has been sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for producing child pornography. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson following Lopez’s conviction on sexual exploitation of a child charges.
The heinous crime was uncovered when authorities learned of the sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl. The victim, identified and confirmed her abuse, naming Lopez as the perpetrator. A subsequent search warrant at Lopez’s residence led to the seizure of several electronic devices that harbored graphic material involving the minor.
In court, a psychologist’s testimony and the letter from the victim were presented as part of the sentence consideration. Senior U.S. District Judge John D. Rainey handed down a sentence of 326 months, emphasizing the severity of Lopez’s actions.
Lopez was arrested in February 2016 and has been in federal custody since. His sentence also includes life on supervised release, following his prison term, with strict sex offender prohibitions to prevent future contact with minors. He will be registered as a sex offender.
The investigation was a collaboration between the FBI and Corpus Christi Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elsa Salinas and Brittany Jensen prosecuted the case under Project Safe Childhood, the Justice Department’s initiative to combat child sexual exploitation.
