A shocking revelation in the fight against methamphetamine has unfolded in Sioux City, Iowa, as Cory Mackey, 34, of Ida Grove, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute over 1.5 kilograms of the highly addictive substance.
According to evidence presented during the June 17, 2021, plea hearing, Mackey and others engaged in a prolonged conspiracy to distribute the illicit drug from February 2019 through July 9, 2020. The investigation revealed that Mackey planned to distribute some or all of the methamphetamine to other individuals.
A search warrant executed on January 16, 2020, at Mackey’s residence uncovered approximately 49 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. A subsequent traffic stop in July 2020, where Mackey was a passenger, yielded over 1.25 kilograms of methamphetamine and over $18,000 in cash.
Mackey’s guilty plea has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the severity of the methamphetamine crisis in Iowa. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of illicit substances and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat them.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick T. Greenwood and was investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, DCI Laboratory, and Ida County Sheriff’s Office.
Mackey faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, a $10,000,000 fine, and five years up to life of supervised release following any imprisonment. Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand will be set after a presentence report is prepared.
