Counterfeit Cash Schemes Land Atlanta Man in Jail

A Georgia man has been charged with a string of financial crimes, including interstate transportation of stolen property and fraudulently transmitting postal money orders.

Shawn S. Foote, 46, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on four counts, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

According to the indictment, Foote traveled from Atlanta to Pittsburgh to sell counterfeit U.S. Postal Money Orders and counterfeit bank checks to another individual for the purpose of being fraudulently negotiated.

The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 35 years in prison, a fine of $1,000,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Paul E. Hull is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The United States Postal Inspection Service and Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.

It is worth noting that an indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Foote’s case is a stark reminder of the dangers of financial crimes and the importance of vigilance in protecting ourselves from these types of scams.
