PROVIDENCE, RI – The grimy details of a financial fraud spree were laid bare as Reynaldo Martinez, 32, from Pawtucket, faced the consequences of his schemes. Today, Martinez was sentenced to over six years in federal prison for swindling more than $100,000 from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the U.S. Treasury.
The sentence, handed down by Chief Judge John J. McConnell, Jr., orders 73 months and one day of incarceration followed by three years of supervised release. Martinez’s guilty plea on April 2, 2025, covered two counts of conspiracy, misuse of a Social Security number, aggravated identity theft, and violating terms of supervised release.
According to court documents, Martinez had a history of appearing at Rhode Island Department of Human Services offices, filing fraudulent SNAP applications. He fraudulently obtained at least 40 EBT cards using stolen identities and secured over $33,000 in benefits. In another brazen scheme, he cashed altered U.S. Treasury checks, obtaining nearly $80,000 through counterfeit driver’s licenses.
Martinez’s criminal resume includes multiple arrests and convictions for fraud-related offenses since 2012. His previous plea to federal charges in 2017 resulted in a 48-month sentence. His latest fraudulent activities were initiated during his supervised release term.
The U.S. Department of Justice and various law enforcement agencies, including the Social Security Administration, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Rhode Island State Police, played pivotal roles in this investigation and prosecution.
Assistant United States Attorney Peter I. Roklan led the prosecution, while a comprehensive investigation was conducted by multiple federal and local law enforcement entities.
