Kenton Binkholder, Counterfeit Check Production, Missouri 2012

A brazen scheme to pass counterfeit checks in the St. Louis area has been brought to a halt, with one local man taking the fall.

Kenton Binkholder, a resident of St. Louis, has pleaded guilty to producing and passing counterfeit checks of a phony company in the St. Louis area in July 2012.

The counterfeit checks, which were passed in the St. Louis area, are the result of a sophisticated operation that involved creating fake checks from a non-existent company.

Binkholder, who appeared before U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel, is currently in custody awaiting sentencing, which is set for July 18, 2013.

The charges against Binkholder carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and/or a fine up to $250,000.

The case was investigated by the St. Louis Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service, with Assistant United States Attorney Tom Albus handling the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

While the full extent of the operation remains unclear, authorities say that Binkholder’s guilty plea marks a significant blow to the counterfeit check ring.
