Jonathan Laporte, age 27, of Covington, Louisiana, was sentenced to 100 months imprisonment, equivalent to 8.3 years, for the January 13, 2012, robbery of a Citizens Bank and Trust in Mandeville, Louisiana.
The brazen daytime robbery, which took place at the Citizens Bank and Trust branch located in Mandeville, left employees and customers shaken. During the heist, Laporte brandished a BB gun, which he claimed was a firearm, and made off with approximately $12,777 in bank funds through force and intimidation.
Laporte’s getaway was short-lived, however, as he crashed his vehicle and suffered minor injuries after a high-speed chase with responding police units. The stolen money was recovered from Laporte’s vehicle, along with the BB gun.
Laporte was apprehended and brought to justice, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Mandeville Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The joint investigation led to Laporte’s indictment and eventual sentencing.
U.S. Attorney Dana Boente commended the law enforcement agencies involved in the case, stating, ‘The sentence handed down today reflects the seriousness of the crime committed by Jonathan Laporte.’
In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Eldon E. Fallon sentenced Laporte to 5 years of supervised release, during which he will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release. Laporte was also ordered to pay restitution to the victims who suffered property damage as a result of his reckless flight from responding police officers.
The prosecution was handled by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney William J. Quinlan, Jr., Supervisor of the U.S. Attorney’s Violent Crime Unit. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the swift action of law enforcement in bringing perpetrators to justice.
The crime has left a lasting impact on the community, and the residents of Mandeville can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served. As the city continues to heal and recover, it is a reminder that the justice system is working to keep its citizens safe.
