NEW ORLEANS, LA – Another lowlife headed to federal prison. Levi Herman, 33, of Metairie, Louisiana, was sentenced to 37 months behind bars today for robbing a Capital One Bank in New Orleans on December 4, 2019. U.S. Attorney Peter Strasser announced the sentencing, handed down by Judge Carl Barbier.
Herman walked into the bank and slapped a handwritten demand note on the teller, claiming he was armed with a gun. He didn’t need to prove it; the threat was enough. He made off with approximately $1,900 in cold, hard cash. The good news? He didn’t get far. Herman was picked up by law enforcement the very next day, December 5, 2019.
The feds didn’t mess around. Herman was indicted on a single count of bank robbery, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a). Today, that indictment paid off with a 37-month sentence. But that’s not all. Herman will also be forced to cough up $1,900 in restitution to cover the stolen funds.
Beyond the prison time and the money, Herman will be under supervised release for two years after he gets out. And to add insult to injury, he’s stuck with a $100 special assessment fee. A small price to pay for risking the lives of bank employees and terrorizing the public, but a price nonetheless.
U.S. Attorney Strasser rightfully praised the collaborative effort of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the New Orleans Police Department. These agencies worked together to bring Herman to justice. Assistant U. S. Attorney Spiro G. Latsis handled the prosecution, ensuring the perp faced the consequences of his actions.
This case serves as a grim reminder that bank robbery, even seemingly small-time, carries serious federal penalties. Herman’s 37-month sentence should deter others from even considering a similar path. The Grimy Times will continue to track federal crime across the nation, exposing the underbelly of American society, one sentence at a time.
