Clement Leach, Bank Robbery, Louisiana 2020

NEW ORLEANS – Clement LEACH, 54, of New Orleans, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced for the brazen March 2, 2020 robbery of a Chase Bank branch. The heist, while not resulting in physical injury, sent a ripple of fear through the city and has now landed Leach with a significant prison term.

Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson announced today that LEACH received 80 months of imprisonment from United States District Judge Sarah S. Vance. The sentence comes after LEACH previously pleaded guilty to Bank Robbery, a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a). This isn’t a plea deal for a slap on the wrist; it’s a recognition of the seriousness of the crime and the threat it posed to the community.

Beyond the prison sentence, LEACH will face 3 years of supervised release upon his eventual release. He’s also been hit with a mandatory $100 special assessment fee and ordered to pay $920 in restitution to Chase Bank – a small portion of the damage done, but a necessary step towards accountability. The money won’t bring back peace of mind to those who witnessed the crime, but it’s a start.

Federal investigators quickly zeroed in on LEACH following the robbery. Details of the investigation have not been fully released, but sources within the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force suggest surveillance footage and witness testimony played a crucial role in building the case. The Task Force, alongside officers from the New Orleans Police Department, worked tirelessly to bring LEACH to justice.

“This sentence sends a clear message: robbing banks in this city – or anywhere in the federal jurisdiction – will not be tolerated,” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson. “We will continue to work with our partners to prosecute these crimes to the fullest extent of the law.” The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jon M. Maestri of the General Crimes Unit, who skillfully presented the evidence before the court.

While 80 months won’t erase the fear caused by the robbery, it offers a measure of closure for the community. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments. The streets of New Orleans are a little safer tonight, but the fight against crime never ends.
