Gregory N. Cason, Aid and Assist in the Preparation and Filing of False Tax Form, West Virginia 2023

CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – The grim halls of justice were again echoed with the sound of conviction as Certified Public Accountant Gregory N. Cason, 45, from Morgantown, was found guilty of tax fraud today, according to Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen.

Cason, a trusted figure in the financial community, had been accused of preparing fraudulent tax returns for AKA Enterprises, Inc., which operated several businesses in Morgantown, including a bustling bar and restaurant. His alleged misdeeds included underreporting income, concealing cash expenses, and failing to report periodic payments to employees.

The jury returned a guilty verdict on two counts of ‘Aid and Assist in the Preparation and Filing of False Tax Form,’ while he was acquitted of one count of ‘Conspiracy to Defraud the Internal Revenue Service and to Aid and Assist in the Preparation and Filing of False Tax Forms.’ Cason now faces up to three years in prison and a fine of $250,000.00 on each count. His sentence will be determined by the severity of his offenses and any prior criminal history.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert McWilliams and Sarah W. Montoro led the prosecution against Cason, with the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation handling the investigation. U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley presided over the trial.

This is a stark reminder of the consequences for those who pervert their positions of trust to commit financial crimes. As Morgantown grapples with this latest corruption case, the community awaits justice and the possibility of reform.
