CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The grim streets of Cross Lanes witnessed justice served today as Darrell Spicer, a 60-year-old felon, was sentenced to federal prison for selling drugs while on supervised release. Carol Casto, United States Attorney, announced the sentence, revealing that Spicer had been caught red-handed in a drug deal.
On June 15, 2016, Spicer sold what he believed to be heroin to an informant working with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department. The substance was later confirmed as fentanyl, a deadly opioid. This revelation led law enforcement to Spicer’s Cross Lanes residence, where they discovered a cache of drugs and cash.
During the raid, officers found heroin, fentanyl, and over $7,000 in cash, some of which was used in the controlled drug purchase. Spicer admitted ownership and the illegal proceeds from his criminal activities.
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department’s STOP Team conducted the investigation, while Assistant United States Attorney Timothy D. Boggess prosecuted. The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., totals six years for possession with intent to distribute heroin and an additional year and a half for violating supervised release, to be served consecutively.
This sentence is part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia’s ongoing battle against prescription drug misuse and the illicit sale of opioids. The office, in collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, continues to crack down on illegal pill trafficking and curtail the spread of opiate painkillers and heroin across communities.
