Marlon Ferro, a 20-year-old from Santa Ana, California, played a key role in a massive cryptocurrency heist that stole over $250 million from victims across the US between late 2023 and early 2025. Ferro, known as GothFerrari, was part of a social engineering conspiracy that used sophisticated online fraud and old-fashioned burglary to drain victims of millions of dollars in digital assets. The heist was carried out by a multi-state and international enterprise with members based in California, Connecticut, New York, Florida, and abroad. Ferro’s role in the conspiracy involved breaking into homes and stealing hardware wallets when other methods failed.
The investigation into the cryptocurrency heist was a multi-year effort by federal authorities. Ferro pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to participate in a racketeer influenced and corrupt organization on October 17, 2025. He was sentenced to 78 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution.
The social engineering enterprise used stolen virtual currency to purchase luxury items and services, including nightclub services ranging up to $500,000 per evening and luxury handbags. The case highlights the growing threat of cryptocurrency fraud and the willingness of federal authorities to prosecute those involved in such crimes.
