NEW ORLEANS, LA – In a case that highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in New Orleans, a 63-year-old Cuban national has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for conspiring to sell a kilogram of cocaine to a confidential informant.
Pablo Pedro Morales-Curbejo, a resident of New Orleans, was previously indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2019 for conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine. He was also charged with attempting to possess with the intent to distribute the same amount.
On December 4, 2019, Morales-Curbejo pled guilty to the conspiracy charge, a violation of 21 U.S.C. 846. He faced a minimum statutory sentence of five years to a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
The investigation into Morales-Curbejo’s activities was a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. At sentencing, Federal District Court Judge Lance Africk ordered that the five-year mandatory minimum sentence be served consecutively to another five-year sentence that Morales-Curbejo was serving for a supervised release revocation.
In total, Morales-Curbejo was sentenced to serve 10 years in federal prison, four years of supervised release following imprisonment, and payment of a $100 special assessment fee.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in bringing Morales-Curbejo to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr. prosecuted the case.
The sentencing of Morales-Curbejo is a significant blow to the organized crime networks operating in New Orleans. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
