Duluth Man Convicted of Illegal Firearm Possession

A Duluth man has been convicted of illegally possessing a firearm, announced Acting U.S. Attorney W. Anders Folk.

Jesse William Peterson, 40, pleaded guilty to possessing a .38-caliber Smith and Wesson revolver with an obliterated serial number, despite being a convicted felon. The firearm was discovered during a two-hour stand-off with law enforcement at a residence in Duluth on October 25, 2020.

At the time of his arrest, Peterson had 13.76 grams of methamphetamine, 11.13 grams of cocaine, 38 doses of LSD, and $5,826 in cash on him. Additionally, 11 live rounds of .38-caliber ammunition were found near the firearm.

Peterson’s prior felony convictions in St. Louis County prohibit him from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law. He was taken into custody after refusing to exit the residence and comply with officers’ attempts to arrest him.

The case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which focuses on reducing violent crime through evidence-based strategies.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph S. Teirab is prosecuting the case, which is the result of an investigation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Duluth Police Department.

Project Safe Neighborhoods is a proven program aimed at reducing violent crime by identifying the most pressing problems in the community and developing comprehensive solutions. Through this strategy, law enforcement focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
