Shocking headlines have gripped Nashville as Tad Cummins, 50, of Columbia, Tenn., faces a two-count federal indictment, including transporting a minor across state lines for criminal sexual conduct and obstruction of justice.
Cummins’ alleged crime came to light on March 13, 2017, when he was found with a 15-year-old girl in Cecilville, Calif. The pair had vanished from Columbia just weeks before, prompting a nationwide search by law enforcement.
On April 20, 2017, Cummins was charged and served with an arrest warrant while being held by the Siskiyou County Sheriff in California. He appeared before a U.S. Magistrate on April 24, 2017, waived a detention hearing, and was transferred to Tennessee for further proceedings.
The defendant was returned to Tennessee on May 9, 2017, where he faced a preliminary and detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes. Cummins was ordered held in custody pending action by the grand jury.
Should Cummins be convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum of ten years in prison, stretching up to life imprisonment.
This harrowing case has been jointly investigated by the FBI and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Phillip Wehby and Sara Beth Myers handling the prosecution. As always, an indictment is merely an accusation, and Cummins is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
