The streets of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, can be a violent place, especially for women. On October 4, 2011, Isiah Mesteth, a 23-year-old local resident, let his anger get the best of him and brutally assaulted his significant other during an argument.
According to court documents, Mesteth hit and kicked his victim in the face and body multiple times, causing her nose and lips to bleed, as well as bruising and swelling to her face and arms. The assault went beyond physical harm, as Mesteth also sexually assaulted her in a manner that caused extreme physical pain.
The victim’s ordeal was a result of Mesteth’s rage, but it could have been prevented. Domestic violence is a pervasive issue in our society, and it’s up to us to speak out against it.
The investigation into the assault was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case.
Mesteth was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 18, 2012, and pled guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury on February 5, 2013. On May 14, 2013, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Mesteth to 72 months of imprisonment, 2 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The sentence is a reminder that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our community. We must hold perpetrators accountable for their actions and work towards creating a safer environment for all.
Isiah Mesteth was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to serve his sentence. His case serves as a stark reminder of the devastation that domestic violence can cause and the importance of speaking out against it.
