EAGLE BUTTE, SD – A terrifying incident has gripped Eagle Butte as Carlin Jimi Jewett, Jr., a/k/a Jimmy Jewett, Jr., 36, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Child Abuse.
Jewett was charged following the alleged assault of two juvenile females on March 31, 2017. The charges are severe, with the maximum penalty upon conviction including up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine.
The defendant appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 23, 2017, pleading not guilty to the Indictment. Jewett remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, with no set date yet announced.
According to the Indictment, Jewett’s actions were particularly heinous due to the victims being under 18 years of age, prompting two counts of Child Abuse to be filed.
The investigation is a collaborative effort between the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller, who is handling the prosecution.
As with any criminal charge, Carlin Jimi Jewett, Jr., is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
