Curwensville Man Guilty of Ammunition Laws Violation
A Clearfield County felon has pleaded guilty to violating federal ammunition laws, a crime that carries stiff penalties.
Chancellor M. Shaw, 27, of Curwensville, Pa. pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson in federal court. Shaw was found in possession of ammunition on September 16, 2019.
Shaw has a history of run-ins with the law, having been convicted in the Court of Common Pleas of Clearfield County on June 26, 2018, of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and flight to avoid apprehension. These crimes are punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.
According to federal law, individuals with such convictions are prohibited from possessing ammunition. Shaw’s guilty plea is a result of an investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Assistant United States Attorney Maureen Sheehan-Balchon is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. Shaw is scheduled to be sentenced on January 18, 2022, at 1:30 p.m. and faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will determine the actual sentence, taking into account the seriousness of the offense and Shaw’s prior criminal history. This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws and the importance of respecting the rights and restrictions placed upon individuals with a history of crime.
The guilty plea in this case is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat crime and maintain public safety in Pennsylvania.
