Two Indianapolis criminals faced the consequences of their actions as they were sentenced to federal prison for robbing a Speedway CVS in April 2024. John Rice, 29, received six years behind bars followed by three years of supervised release for interference with commerce by robbery and possessing a firearm during a crime of violence. Robert Larue, 45, was handed an eight-year sentence plus five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to similar charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The heist occurred on April 13, 2024, when the duo entered the Cunningham Road CVS with guns and demanded cash. They made off with an undisclosed amount that included cash containing a GPS tracker. The Speedway Police Department was swift in their response, locating the suspects within half an hour of the crime. A pursuit ensued before officers apprehended both men.
During the search, law enforcement found two handguns – a Ruger and a Taurus – along with $1,576 in cash. Larue’s criminal history includes prior armed robbery convictions, making him ineligible for legal firearm possession. “These armed criminals terrorized employees and put innocent lives at risk,” stated Tom Wheeler, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.
Thomas Greco, ATF Special Agent in Charge, praised the successful outcome of the investigation and prosecution, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with local law enforcement. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives played a significant role in this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matt Barloh prosecuted the case effectively.
This incident is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The Department of Justice launched a strategic plan to strengthen PSN on May 26, 2021, focusing on fostering trust in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
