Cyber Threat Hits Home in Pittsburgh

By [Investigative Reporter], Grimy Times

A series of high-profile cyber attacks has hit Western Pennsylvania, leaving residents and business owners on high alert. The latest wave of attacks has targeted local universities and banks, causing widespread disruption and financial losses.

Earlier this year, the University of Pittsburgh was hit with bomb threats, forcing the evacuation of several buildings and straining local emergency services. More recently, a series of denial-of-service attacks has crippled the online operations of several area banks, leaving customers unable to access their accounts.

At the center of the growing cyber threat is U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton, who has made addressing cyber security a top priority during his tenure. Hickton invited national expert Paul G. Kaminski to visit Pittsburgh to speak on the issue, stressing the importance of taking action to mitigate the threat.

Kaminski, chair of the RAND Corporation and chairman and CEO of Technovation, Inc., will deliver a series of speeches over the next two days, detailing the scope and severity of the cyber threat. Hickton will join Kaminski for a press conference on Friday, January 11, 2013, at 11:15 a.m. in the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Interviews with Kaminski will be available following the press conference, providing a unique opportunity for local media to get inside the mind of a leading expert on cyber security. The press conference will take place in the Main Conference Room at 700 Grant Street – Suite 4000, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.

‘Cyber threats represent both a real challenge for Western Pennsylvania, as illustrated by last year’s bomb threats against the University of Pittsburgh and the continuing denial-of-service attacks on area banks, and an opportunity given the resources at our universities,’ Hickton said.

Western Pennsylvania corporate and foundation leaders, law enforcement, and cyber professionals are expected to attend Kaminski’s speeches, which will provide a valuable opportunity for discussion and collaboration on addressing the growing cyber threat.

The issue of cyber security has become increasingly pressing in recent years, with hackers and cyber terrorists targeting major corporations and government agencies. As the threat continues to grow, it is clear that action must be taken to protect our communities and businesses.
