A Des Moines, Iowa, federal court has handed down a 27-year prison sentence to Cynthia Ann Mitteness, a 49-year-old Minnesota woman convicted of conspiring to transport a minor child with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
According to court documents, Mitteness conspired with another individual to transport a minor child from Minnesota to Polk County, Iowa, between April 2016 and July 8, 2016, with the intention of engaging the minor in unlawful sexual activity.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Carver County Sheriff’s Office, and the United States Marshals Service conducted a joint investigation into the case, which led to Mitteness’ guilty plea on March 7, 2017.
United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel announced Mitteness’ sentencing on July 19, 2017, stating that her actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for the safety and well-being of a minor child.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa prosecuted the case, which serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences that await those who engage in such heinous crimes.
As a result of Mitteness’ actions, a minor child was put in harm’s way, and it is the responsibility of law enforcement and the justice system to ensure that those who commit such crimes are held accountable.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilant law enforcement and the need for continued efforts to protect our children from exploitation and abuse.
The 27-year prison sentence handed down to Mitteness is a testament to the determination of law enforcement and the justice system to bring those who commit such crimes to justice.
