A 26-year-old man from South Point, Ohio, has been locked away for 30 years for producing child pornography in Eastern Kentucky. Michael Merrick was sentenced to 360 months, the maximum possible, for his crimes.
The investigation began in September 2024 when a minor victim reported she’d been raped and photographed by Merrick. Law enforcement found the explicit images on his phone and he quickly cracked under pressure, confessing to the abuse.
Merrick was busted by the FBI and Ashland Police Department, who worked together to bring him to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Roth handled the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide effort to combat child sex exploitation and abuse. Merrick will have to serve at least 85% of his prison sentence before being eligible for release.
Under supervision, Merrick will be watched for 25 years after his release from prison. He’ll have to answer to the U.S. Probation Office, making sure he doesn’t reoffend.
