WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tyrone Hunter, 25, of Washington, D.C., is facing a lengthy prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of a brazen two-day crime spree that terrorized residents in Northwest and Northeast D.C. last year. Hunter was convicted of eight counts of armed robbery, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, and a slew of related weapons offenses.
The five-week trial, held in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, laid out a damning case built on the testimony of over 50 witnesses. Prosecutors detailed how Hunter and his crew used a stolen 2016 grey Audi sedan as their mobile command center, hitting eight different victims at gunpoint over a 48-hour period starting January 15, 2017. The first robbery occurred before dawn, and the relentless attacks continued into the night of January 16th, leaving a trail of fear and stolen property.
Evidence presented showed a consistent modus operandi: Hunter would exit the front passenger seat of the stolen Audi, brandish a firearm, and rob victims of their personal belongings before speeding away. The stolen Audi, initially lifted from a parking garage in the 400 block of K Street NW, became a symbol of Hunter’s audacity and disregard for the law. The sheer number of robberies, coupled with the reckless use of a stolen vehicle, painted a picture of a dangerous and determined criminal.
The end came on February 8, 2017, when law enforcement spotted Hunter behind the wheel of the stolen Audi. A brief but chaotic chase ensued, culminating in a crash that involved multiple vehicles. Hunter bailed from the wreckage and attempted to flee on foot, but officers quickly apprehended him. Crucially, several victims positively identified Hunter as the gunman who robbed them, solidifying the case against him.
U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu lauded the collaborative effort of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team, and the District of Columbia Department of Forensic Sciences in bringing Hunter to justice. The investigation also involved significant contributions from within the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including dedicated work from special counsel, forensic specialists, criminal investigators, and paralegals. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Vivien Cockburn and Ellen D’Angelo were instrumental in securing the conviction.
Hunter has remained in custody since his arrest and now awaits sentencing, scheduled for May 2, 2018, before the Honorable Robert A. Salerno. With the weight of eight armed robbery convictions and additional charges, Hunter is likely facing a substantial prison term for his reign of terror on the streets of Washington, D.C. This conviction sends a clear message: those who prey on the vulnerable will be held accountable.
