A 33-year-old Washington D.C. woman has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for attempting to stab a police officer with a pocketknife after he confronted her about shoplifting at a CVS store in the city.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Jamilla Haskins, 33, of Washington D.C., pleaded guilty on February 21, 2024, to assault with a dangerous weapon.
The incident occurred on January 23, 2024, at the CVS located at 128 Kennedy Street NW, where Haskins concealed 30 items, including hair clips, shaving cream, and body oil, belonging to CVS, inside her bag.
After passing all points of sale and attempting to leave the store without paying for the items, an MPD detective who was checking on retail thefts at local stores, saw Haskins attempting to steal items and stopped her.
Haskins responded by pepper spraying the detective in the face, and a struggle ensued, which worked its way from the exit doors through the vestibule to the front outside entrance of the store.
During the struggle, Haskins pointed a black pocketknife at the detective and threatened to stab him. The detective, with pepper spray in his eyes, disarmed her and Haskins continued to try to make her escape, but was eventually stopped by the detective and MPD officers responding to his call at the corner of 2nd St NW on Kennedy St NW.
The Metropolitan Police Department investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rashmika Nedungadi prosecuted the case.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement, ‘This case demonstrates the dangers that police officers face in protecting our communities from violent individuals.’
The case highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and the need for law enforcement to prioritize public safety.
