Damarion Boyd, Machine Gun Possession, Ohio 2023

CINCINNATI, OH – Damarion Boyd, 20, of Cincinnati, has confessed to federal authorities that he illegally possessed a device capable of turning a standard Glock pistol into a fully automatic machine gun. The guilty plea, entered in U.S. District Court, underscores the growing threat of readily available, untraceable weapon modifications flooding the streets.

According to court documents, Boyd was on probation when his residence was searched on March 21st. While attempting to mislead probation officers about the location of his bedroom, they eventually discovered a hidden room in the basement. Inside, alongside personal items like a graduation photo and his probation paperwork, was a loaded Glock firearm fitted with a 3D-printed “switch” – a simple but dangerous device that allows the weapon to fire continuously with a single pull of the trigger.

Federal prosecutors say the conversion device transforms the handgun into an illegal machine gun under federal law. Boyd initially tried to conceal the location of the room, but the evidence was undeniable. He was subsequently charged in May 2023, and the case has moved swiftly through the federal court system. The proliferation of these 3D-printed switches represents a significant challenge for law enforcement, allowing criminals to easily bypass existing gun control measures.

“This case highlights the ongoing efforts of the ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to remove dangerous weapons and modifications from the hands of those who would misuse them,” said Daryl S. McCormick, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Columbus Field Division. The investigation revealed a blatant disregard for the law, especially considering Boyd was already under court supervision.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker for the Southern District of Ohio announced the guilty plea, which was entered before Senior U.S. District Judge Timothy S. Black. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ryan A. Keefe and Ashley N. Brucato are prosecuting the case. Sentencing for Damarion Boyd has not yet been scheduled, but he faces a significant prison term for the illegal possession of a machine gun. The maximum penalty for this crime can be upwards of ten years.

This case is part of a larger crackdown on illegal firearm modifications, as authorities struggle to keep pace with the increasing availability of 3D-printed weapons parts. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing of Damarion Boyd. The incident raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current regulations in preventing dangerous individuals from obtaining the means to convert legal firearms into illegal, fully automatic weapons.
