GREAT FALLS, MT – Logan Sea Pallister, 24, of Helena, Montana, appeared in federal court today, pleading not guilty to charges stemming from a chilling threat to damage a Helena Public Schools building with pipe bombs. The case, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Helena Police Department, paints a disturbing picture of premeditated violence narrowly averted.
According to the indictment, Pallister allegedly took “a substantial step” toward carrying out the attack on May 31, 2022. Prosecutors claim he intended to maliciously damage the school building using explosive devices. The specifics of Pallister’s alleged plans haven’t been released, but the charges suggest a serious and credible threat that prompted immediate law enforcement intervention.
Beyond the attempted property damage charge, Pallister also faces accusations of possessing unregistered destructive devices – the pipe bombs themselves – and an unregistered silencer. These weapons violations carry significant penalties, adding to the gravity of the situation. Federal law requires registration of such items, and Pallister allegedly failed to comply.
If convicted of the most serious charge – attempted property damage by use of fire or explosive – Pallister could face a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, extending up to a maximum of 20 years behind bars. He also risks a hefty $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release following his incarceration. U.S. Magistrate Judge John T. Johnston has already ordered Pallister detained while the case proceeds.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey K. Starnes is leading the prosecution. The government maintains that an indictment is simply an accusation, and Pallister is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the nature of the charges underscores the potential danger posed to students, faculty, and the Helena community.
The public can monitor the case’s progress through the U.S. District Court Calendar and the PACER system (case reference 23-02). While the details remain under seal in many respects, this case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of violence and the diligent work of federal and local law enforcement in protecting our schools.
