BROKEN ARROW, OK – Louis Clayton Chaffin, 45, of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, will spend the next seven years in federal prison for a brutal 2017 home invasion that left two victims seriously injured. Chaffin was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell, following a guilty plea to first degree burglary in Indian Country and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country.
The attack unfolded December 9, 2017, when Chaffin forcibly entered a Broken Arrow residence, kicking in the front door while armed with an aluminum baseball bat and a 9mm pistol. According to court documents, Chaffin immediately began assaulting the occupants – a man and a woman – repeatedly striking them with the bat. He then escalated the violence, pointing the firearm at the man and striking him in the face with the weapon.
“Louis Chaffin broke into a home wielding a bat and gun. He then assaulted two victims, seriously injuring them,” stated U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. “Fortunately, the incident was deescalated when the homeowner stepped in and stopped him. Today’s 7-year sentence should make it clear that this office and our law enforcement partners will hold violent perpetrators accountable.”
The violent episode only came to an end when another individual, identified as the homeowner, intervened, brandishing his own firearm and ordering Chaffin to leave the property. The male victim suffered horrific injuries, including broken facial bones and a fractured skull. The female victim sustained a concussion and required extensive stitching to repair facial wounds sustained during the beating.
The investigation into the assault was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Broken Arrow Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael F. Harder and Eric O. Johnston led the prosecution. Chaffin’s 84-month sentence will be followed by two years of supervised release upon his eventual release from prison.
