Local Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Attempting to Rape 11-Year-Old

Rochester, NY – Local man Daniel Hays, 42, of Bliss, NY, has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempting to have sex with an 11-year-old girl.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Hays was convicted of attempted receipt of child pornography.

In April and May 2021, Hays engaged in sexually explicit online and text communications with an undercover New York State Police investigator who he believed to be an 11-year-old girl. During the conversations, Hays discussed having sex with the child and asked the child to produce and send him naked photographs.

On May 11, 2021, Hays traveled from Bliss to the child’s home in the Western District of New York to have sex with the child. He was arrested upon his arrival at the meeting place, where he was found to be in possession of candy he purchased as a gift for the child.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Rossi stated that the sentencing is the result of an investigation by the New York State Police and Homeland Security Investigations.

The defendant, Daniel Hays, was sentenced to 5 years in prison and 10 years supervised release by U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr.
