A Rochester man is facing up to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing ammunition as a convicted felon.
Daniel Owens, 27, was found to have 12 gauge shotgun ammunition in his residence during a police investigation on January 23, 2019. The officers also discovered a pipe bomb, a Molotov cocktail device, and other suspicious items.
Owens admitted to building the pipe bomb and packing it with screws and nails during conversations with police. The defendant is legally prohibited from possessing ammunition due to a 2018 conviction in Monroe County Court for Criminal Possession of a Firearm.
The matter was brought by the United States Attorney’s Office as part of its Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. This program is a violent crime reduction effort that focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs.
The investigation was led by the Greece Police Department, under the direction of Chief Patrick Phelan, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge John B. Devito, New York Field Division.
Sentencing for Owens is scheduled for October 15, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa.
