NEW YORK MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO CYBERSTALKING

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a shocking turn of events, Daniel Richter, 47, of Middle Island, NY, pleaded guilty to cyberstalking, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to court documents, Richter sent hundreds of threatening and sexual emails to Victim 1’s personal email address between December 24, 2023, and March 27, 2024. The emails, which became increasingly threatening over time, included mentions of Victim 1’s son by name.

Richter also sent multiple emails and/or Google voicemails to Victim 1 on an almost daily basis, sparking concerns for her safety and that of her family members. Law enforcement found photos of Victim 1, handwritten notes of her phone number, as well as a black knit ski mask, and several bottles of women’s hair dye in Richter’s hotel room during a raid in March 2024.

This is not Richter’s first run-in with the law. In September 2020, he was convicted of interstate communication of threat to injure in the Western District of New York and was sentenced to serve 24 months in prison.

The plea is the result of an investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Michael Filicetti, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Philip Tejera.

Richter will be sentenced on June 18, 2026, before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra, Jr. for his role in the cyberstalking scheme. As he awaits sentencing, the community remains vigilant, knowing that cyberstalking is a real and present threat to public safety.

In a statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney Franz M. Wright, who is handling the case, emphasized the severity of the crimes committed by Richter. ‘This case highlights the dangers of cyberstalking and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions,’ Wright said.
