A former St. Lucie County school teacher is behind bars, charged with luring a student over the internet. Daniel Tyler Morgan, 30, of Jupiter, is accused of using the internet to persuade, induce, or entice a child to engage in prohibited sexual activity.
Morgan, a history teacher at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, allegedly sent inappropriate messages to a minor student over a social media application. The communications were sexual in nature and spanned several months. Morgan is no longer employed by the school district.
The case against Morgan comes after a concerned citizen reported the allegations to St. Lucie County School District authorities on May 13, 2016. A subsequent investigation by ICE-HSI and the Port St. Lucie Police Department revealed the extent of Morgan’s online activities. If convicted, he faces a statutory minimum 10-year sentence and a maximum of life in prison.
Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, commended the investigative efforts of ICE-HSI and the Port St. Lucie Police Department. Morgan’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel E. Funk and Special Assistant United States Attorney Ryan Butler.
An indictment is only an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The case is being prosecuted in the District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
