Mail Scandal Rocks Buffalo as Daniel Witek Guilty of Mail Fraud
In a shocking turn of events, 54-year-old Daniel Witek of Buffalo, NY, pleaded guilty to mail fraud in a federal court. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael DiGiacomo and Jonathan P. Cantil, Witek devised a scheme while volunteering at the Buffalo History Museum in 2013. He stole historical writings addressed to Anson Conger Goodyear and attempted to sell them to autograph dealers in New York City and New Jersey.
The plea is the result of an investigation by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Adam S. Cohen.
Witek’s scheme was uncovered, and he is now facing the consequences of his actions. The sentencing is scheduled for November 8, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. before Judge William M. Skretny.
The case highlights the importance of museum security and the need for volunteers to uphold the highest standards of integrity.
