Dansville Man Sentenced for Child Exploitation
Rochester, NY – In a disturbing case of child exploitation, 43-year-old William F. Chappell of Dansville, New York, was sentenced to 14 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release by U.S. District Judge David G. Larimer. The conviction stems from Chappell’s heinous crimes of enticing a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity.
According to the evidence, between March 2009 and May 2009, Chappell repeatedly used a cellular phone to communicate with a child under the age of 18, persuading them to engage in sexual activity. The defendant took the exploitation a step further by requesting and receiving sexually explicit photographs from the child.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Marisa J. Miller, who handled the case, emphasized that Chappell’s actions were premeditated and calculated. Miller stated that the defendant was aware that the child was not yet 18 years old when he communicated with and enticed them.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet and to identify and rescue victims.
The investigation that led to Chappell’s conviction was a collaborative effort between Special Agents of the Department of Homeland Security and Officers of the Dansville Police Department. The sentencing is a testament to the dedication and hard work of these law enforcement agencies in bringing justice to the victims of child exploitation.
Chappell’s 14-year prison sentence serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit and harm our children. The Grimy Times commends the authorities for their tireless efforts in combating child exploitation and urges the public to remain vigilant in reporting any suspicious activity that may indicate child exploitation.
