WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA — Clifton R. Summerfield, a 34-year-old man from Marlinton, West Virginia, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for his failure to update his sex offender registration.
Summerfield’s crime spree began in February 2016 and stretched into November of the same year, when he failed to register and maintain an updated sex offender registry in Pocahontas County. His neglect was due to a conviction under state law that required him to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
In January 2017, Summerfield pled guilty to one count of ‘Failure to Update Sex Offender Registration,’ marking a pivotal moment in his legal saga. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah W. Montoro prosecuted the case with tenacity on behalf of the government, while the United States Marshals Service conducted the investigation.
The solemnity of the courtroom was not lost on U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey, who presided over the sentence. In a move that underscored the seriousness of Summerfield’s offense, the judge handed down the 12-month and one-day term.
Summerfield’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who fail to comply with sex offender registration laws, emphasizing the ongoing vigilance required to protect the public from repeat offenders.
