A 34-year-old Marlinton man faces serious time behind bars after pleading guilty to failing to update his sex offender registration. Clifton R. Summerfield, of Marlinton, West Virginia, admitted to violating the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act by not updating his registration as required.
According to court documents, Summerfield failed to register and update his registration as a sex offender in Pocahontas County, WV, from February 2016 through November 2016. As a convicted sex offender, Summerfield is required to register under federal law.
The offense carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. However, under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence will be determined by the seriousness of the offense and Summerfield’s prior criminal history.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah W. Montoro prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, while the United States Marshals Service conducted the investigation.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the case, which is a stark reminder of the consequences of failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements.
