Summerfield, 34, of Marlinton, West Virginia, admitted in federal court to dodging his legal obligation to keep his sex offender registration current—a failure that stretched across nearly a year in Pocahontas County. The guilty plea, entered in Elkins, West Virginia, marks the latest enforcement of federal tracking laws meant to keep dangerous offenders visible to law enforcement and the public.
Between February 2016 and November 2016, Summerfield vanished from the registry, failing to verify or update his address and status despite being legally required to do so under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. His obligation stems from a prior state conviction that mandated lifetime compliance with registration protocols—a rule he ignored for nine months.
Summerfield pleaded guilty to one count of “Failure to Update Sex Offender Registration,” a federal offense that carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The charge underscores the federal government’s willingness to prosecute individuals who circumvent monitoring systems designed to protect communities.
The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service, whose fugitive task forces routinely track down non-compliant registrants. Their work led to Summerfield’s identification and arrest, closing a gap in the system that could have left local residents unaware of his presence.
