A 54-year-old Landover man has been sentenced to over 12 years in federal prison for his role in an armed carjacking that took place in Prince George’s County.
On June 5, 2019, Dante Tyler-El, 54, perpetrated three armed robberies and a carjacking, which left several victims shaken and fearful for their lives.
According to court documents, Tyler-El’s crimes began with an armed robbery at a gas station in Prince Frederick, Maryland, where he assaulted a victim and stole their wallets and credit cards.
Later that day, Tyler-El approached a victim in a parking lot in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and demanded money at gunpoint. He then handcuffed the victim and forced her into the back seat of her vehicle, where he restrained her while he rummaged through the vehicle.
When the victim screamed, Tyler-El struck her with the pistol, causing severe bruising on her face. After finding the victim’s credit cards, Tyler-El got into the driver’s seat and drove away with the victim still in the back seat. He eventually dropped the victim off and fled the scene.
Tyler-El was arrested on June 6, 2019, after crossing the Bay Bridge into Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, where a search of his vehicle recovered some of the victims’ credit cards and the loaded Walther PK 380 used during the robberies and carjacking.
U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm sentenced Tyler-El to 150 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for carjacking and for using, carrying and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
Tyler-El entered his guilty plea on February 25, 2020.
“Armed criminals, like Dante Tyler-El, jeopardize lives and they must be held accountable,” said United States Attorney Robert K. Hur. “Police and prosecutors are working to identify armed criminals who deserve to be charged in federal court. As a result of his conviction, Dante Tyler-El will now serve more than 12 years in federal prison, where there is no parole—ever. Please put down the gun and save a life, maybe even your own.”
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
