PEORIA, Ill. – Kevin Marshall, a 35-year-old Danville native, was handed a life sentence without parole on September 8, 2025, for the chilling carjacking and murder of Daniel Walter in Danville on April 25, 2020.
Marshall, who had previously been convicted of second-degree murder, used a Taurus handgun to execute Walter at a rural Danville home. He lured Walter out of his truck at 4 a.m., shooting him four times before returning to deliver a fatal five-shot barrage. Marshall then took Walter’s possessions and fled the scene with the victim’s vehicle.
Afterward, Marshall embarked on a drug trafficking spree, selling methamphetamine until his arrest in August 2020. The seized firearm was tied to Walter’s murder as well as other shootings in Danville. Marshall was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2021 and charged with multiple counts, including carjacking, murder, drug trafficking, and firearms violations.
During the trial from July 31 to August 7, 2024, evidence of Marshall’s attempts to tamper with witnesses and obstruct justice was presented. Despite these efforts, he was found guilty on all counts. U.S. District Judge Colin S. Bruce noted Marshall’s lack of remorse and his violent history in imposing four life sentences.
Acting U.S. Attorney Gregory M. Gilmore emphasized the office’s commitment to justice for victims and community safety, thanking law enforcement partners for their dedication. Danville Chief of Police Christopher S. Yates praised the collaboration between agencies and the bravery of witnesses who contributed to the conviction of Marshall.
