A brutal assault on a woman left her with a lifelong injury, and now the perpetrator is behind bars. Darek Paul Birdinground, 34, of Crow Agency, Montana, was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in the violent attack.
The assault occurred on January 21, 2023, in Crow Agency, on the Crow Indian Reservation. According to court documents, Birdinground was driving an SUV when he caught up to the victim, identified as Jane Doe, who was driving a truck. After a few angry words, Birdinground punched Doe on the side of her left eye, causing her to lose vision in that eye. Birdinground then used a baseball bat to break the windows of the truck.
The FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the crime, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case. The violent nature of the attack shocked the community, and the severity of the sentence is a testament to the seriousness of the crime.
Birdinground pleaded guilty in April to assault resulting in serious bodily injury as charged in an indictment. The assault was a senseless act of violence that left the victim with a lifelong injury.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Birdinground’s sentence is a reflection of the severity of the crime and the need for justice in our community.
The victim, Jane Doe, is still recovering from the physical and emotional trauma of the assault. Her bravery in coming forward and seeking justice is an inspiration to us all.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Jessed Laslovich said, ‘We take cases like this very seriously and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure justice is served.’
