Daren Li, Money Laundering, California 2024

LOS ANGELES, CA – Daren Li, 41, a citizen of both China and St. Kitts and Nevis, has confessed to laundering over $73 million stolen from victims of elaborate cryptocurrency investment scams. Li, who flitted between residences in China, Cambodia, and the United Arab Emirates, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, admitting his central role in a scheme that preyed on unsuspecting investors.

The Justice Department alleges Li and his accomplices built a complex network of shell companies and international bank accounts to scrub the illicit funds. According to Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, the operation funneled $73 million from defrauded victims, proving that even operating outside U.S. borders isn’t a shield from federal prosecution. “Although Li committed this offense from outside the United States, he was not beyond the reach of the Justice Department,” Argentieri stated.

Li was apprehended at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on April 12th and extradited to the Central District of California to face the charges. Court documents reveal Li communicated with co-conspirators using encrypted messaging, directing them to establish U.S. bank accounts under the guise of legitimate businesses. These accounts served as conduits for the flow of funds ripped off from scam victims. The operation involved converting the stolen dollars into the cryptocurrency Tether (USDT) and then distributing it to digital wallets controlled by Li and his network.

The scale of the laundering operation is staggering. At least $73.6 million in victim funds landed directly in accounts linked to Li and his co-conspirators, with $59.8 million originating from U.S.-based shell companies established solely to conceal the source of the money. United States Attorney Martin Estrada warned potential investors, “Investors should be diligent and on guard against anyone offering quick riches via new, exotic investments. A healthy dose of skepticism could prevent financial ruin down the road.”

The U.S. Secret Service, leading the investigation through its Global Investigative Operations Center, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in tackling transnational financial crimes. Acting Assistant Director of Investigations Michael Ball stated, “This investigation demonstrates how domestic and international partnerships are vital to successfully combatting transnational crime.” Assistance also came from Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection, Dominican Republic authorities, U.S. Marshals, DEA, and the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs.

Li is set to be sentenced on March 3, 2025, and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years behind bars. The final sentence will be determined by a federal judge, taking into account sentencing guidelines and other relevant factors. This case serves as a stark reminder that the allure of quick profits in the cryptocurrency world often masks dangerous and sophisticated criminal enterprises.
