GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Carlos Fernandez-Barritos, a Mexican national who once peddled drugs on the streets of Connecticut, has been slammed with a 16-month prison sentence for illegal reentry into the United States. The sentence was announced by Vanessa Roberts Avery, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
Fernandez-Barritos, also known as “Ricardo Fernandez,” was first sentenced in December 2014 to serve roughly 14 months for his role in a Bridgeport-based narcotics trafficking ring. After serving his time and being deported to Mexico in January 2015, he managed to cross the border back into the U.S.
On November 4, 2022, Fernandez-Barritos was picked up by Hartford Police for disorderly conduct, threatening behavior, third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and interfering with police. Bonded out on $20,000, he vanished after a stabbing incident involving his domestic partner in East Hartford on March 15, 2023.
Since August 15, 2023, Fernandez-Barritos has been detained pending charges of illegal reentry into the U.S., which were confirmed when he pleaded guilty on May 3, 2024. The investigation was led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie T. Levick handled the prosecution.
This hard-hitting retribution against a drug dealer who defied the law once more sends a stark message to those who dare challenge America’s borders and its justice system. The sentence is a testament to the unwavering commitment of federal authorities to uphold the rule of law in the face of criminal defiance.
Carlos Fernandez-Barritos’ illegal reentry into the U.S. is yet another grim reminder that the fight against drug trafficking and the protection of public safety are paramount concerns for federal prosecutors. The sentence handed down today serves as a wake-up call to those who might consider flouting American law.
