South Carolina Woman Sentenced for Mortgage Fraud Scheme

Columbia, SC – In a brazen attempt to evade the law, 60-year-old Darlene Henderson of Leesville, South Carolina, has been sentenced to eight months of home confinement for her role in a massive mortgage fraud scheme. Henderson, who used her position at the bank to approve loans, was found guilty of Wire Fraud, a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1343.

According to evidence presented at the hearing, Henderson assisted Michael Yant, who was previously sentenced to five months incarceration, in committing mortgage fraud on a number of Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans between November 2011 and December 2013. Yant’s scheme involved a prohibited rent-to-own scheme, where borrowers were required to make payments in exchange for the right to purchase a property. Henderson used her position to approve these loans despite suspicious borrower information being relayed to her.

A number of these loans are now delinquent or in default, leaving homeowners in a precarious financial situation. The scheme, which was uncovered by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of the Inspector General, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, demonstrates a clear lack of accountability within the banking industry.

Henderson’s sentence, which includes five years of probation, is a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in such egregious behavior. The $130,000 restitution order is a necessary step towards making amends for the harm caused by Henderson’s actions.

The case serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit the system for personal gain. It highlights the importance of transparency and accountability within the financial industry, and the need for stricter regulations to prevent such schemes from occurring in the future.

Assistant United States Attorney Winston Holliday of the Columbia office prosecuted the case, bringing Henderson to justice for her role in the mortgage fraud scheme. Contact Person: Winston Holliday (803) 929-3079

This is not the first time Henderson has been involved in a high-profile scandal. Her actions have left a trail of destruction in their wake, and it is imperative that she is held accountable for her crimes.
