Daron Cottingham Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison for Armed Carjackings

A Washington D.C. man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, with two years suspended, for multiple armed carjackings that occurred in January 2022. Daron Cottingham, 20, was found guilty of two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence or dangerous crime and one count of carjacking.

According to court documents, Cottingham committed the first crime on January 18, 2022, when he approached a person cleaning a BMW vehicle in the rear of 316 34th Street, NE, Washington D.C. He took out a firearm and demanded the vehicle keys from the victim, striking the victim once in the nose with the firearm.

Just over a week later, on January 28, 2022, Cottingham committed another armed carjacking. He booked a ride through Lyft and, when the driver refused to take him to his destination, pulled out a firearm and demanded that the driver exit the vehicle. The victim fled, and Cottingham took control of the vehicle, leading Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers on a chase.

Cottingham was eventually arrested and found to be in possession of a ring of car keys, including a BMW key that matched the BMW taken in the January 18th offense. He was also found to be in possession of bank and identification cards belonging to the Lyft driver.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Robert J. Contee, III, of the MPD commended the work of the officers and detectives who conducted the investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorney Andy Wang, who prosecuted the case.

Cottingham was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with two years suspended, and ordered to serve two years of supervised probation and 90 hours of community service. The sentence was rendered as part of the Youth Rehabilitation Act.

The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of armed carjackings and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes. We will continue to work to keep our communities safe and bring those responsible for these crimes to justice.
