A St. Louis businessman has been sentenced to prison for embezzling millions from his company.
Darrell Niswonger, 48, of St. Louis, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay $4.2 million in restitution for his role in the embezzlement scheme.
According to court documents, Niswonger embezzled funds from his company, America’s Choice Health Plans, between 2013 and 2020. The scheme involved Niswonger using company funds for personal expenses, including real estate purchases and luxury items.
The embezzlement scheme was uncovered by a forensic accountant who discovered discrepancies in the company’s financial records. An investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI followed, leading to Niswonger’s indictment in 2022.
Niswonger pleaded guilty to the charges in 2023 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Rodney Sippel in the Eastern District of Missouri.
The case is a stark reminder of the seriousness of white-collar crime and the importance of corporate accountability. As Grimy Times has reported extensively, embezzlement schemes like Niswonger’s can have devastating consequences for employees, customers, and the wider community.
The U.S. Department of Justice has vowed to continue investigating and prosecuting white-collar crimes, with Attorney General Merrick Garland stating that ‘corporate greed and corruption will not be tolerated.’
The sentence handed down to Niswonger is a significant one, and it serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar schemes.
Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
