Darrion Young, 32, of New Orleans, is headed to federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm and fabricating a story that sent an innocent man to jail. The 40-month sentence lands the convicted felon behind bars for actions that endangered public trust and weaponized law enforcement against an innocent person.
Young pleaded guilty in June 2017 to being a felon in possession of a firearm and making false statements to agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The charges stem from events on November 24, 2015, when Young was found in possession of a gun — a violation of federal law due to his prior felony conviction in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
But the crime didn’t end with the weapon. After his arrest, Young doubled down with deception. In two separate interviews with federal agents, he falsely claimed another man was involved in the shooting at Bunny Friend Park on November 22, 2015. That accusation was a lie — a calculated move that had real consequences.
The man Young named wasn’t even in Louisiana at the time of the shooting. He was wrongfully detained and held in custody for nearly two weeks before authorities uncovered the truth. Young’s false statements didn’t just waste investigative resources — they destroyed days of an innocent man’s freedom.
U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan handed down the 40-month sentence and added three years of supervised release. In her ruling, the court underscored the severity of both the gun violation and the deliberate attempt to mislead federal investigators conducting a critical public safety probe.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans, who oversaw the case, commended the ATF for their relentless work in exposing Young’s lies and securing justice. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan L. Shih led the prosecution, ensuring accountability not just for the illegal firearm, but for the damage done by Young’s false accusations.
