David Castillo, Child Sexual Abuse, New Mexico 2015

A New Mexico man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for child sexual abuse conviction. David Castillo, 38, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation who resides in Mexican Springs, N.M., was sentenced today in federal court in Santa Fe, N.M., to 20 years in federal prison for his child sexual abuse conviction.

Castillo will be on supervised release for ten years after completing his prison sentence. He also will be required to register as a sex offender.

The crimes took place in the summer of 2006, when the victim was eight years old, and over the Christmas holiday in 2006, when the victim was nine years old. According to the plea agreement, Castillo sexually assaulted the victim five times during the periods of time on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

The case was investigated by the Gallup office of the FBI and the New Mexico State Police. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Mease.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the DOJ to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Castillo was arrested on May 17, 2015, on a two-count indictment charging him with aggravated sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12.
