FORT SMITH, AR – A Sebastian County man is headed to federal prison after admitting to a bizarre and dangerous campaign of threats against the Fayetteville Federal Courthouse and, unbelievably, the White House. David Daniel Dieringer, III, 28, was sentenced to 36 months behind bars followed by three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of Mailing a Threatening Communication.
The case unfolded last summer when the Sebastian County District Court received a chilling letter on June 25, 2021. Dieringer, then an inmate at the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center, penned a message explicitly threatening to detonate explosives at both the Fayetteville courthouse and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The letter didn’t just state the threat; it included a gruesome ultimatum – silence on the recipient’s part, or death.
During an interview with investigators, Dieringer didn’t back down. He confessed to sending the letter and doubled down on his intent, stating he *would* carry out the bombings if released. Even more disturbing, he detailed how to construct a pressure cooker bomb – a device favored by terrorists and domestic extremists. This wasn’t idle talk; Dieringer appeared to have given serious thought to a real attack.
But he didn’t stop there. On July 11, 2021, while still incarcerated, Dieringer managed to send *another* letter, this time directly addressed to President Joe Biden. The message was blunt and menacing: “When I get out of federal prison, I’m going to blow up the White House.” Again, when questioned, Dieringer admitted to authorship, cementing a pattern of escalating threats.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, involving the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department, the United States Postal Service, the United States Marshals Service, and, of course, the U.S. Secret Service. U.S. Attorney David Clay Fowlkes of the Western District of Arkansas announced the sentencing, highlighting the seriousness of the threats and the commitment to protecting federal buildings and personnel.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Jennen successfully prosecuted the case. While 36 months may seem a lengthy sentence, the potential for devastation Dieringer threatened, combined with his detailed knowledge of bomb-making, clearly warranted significant punishment.
